50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations
between Thailand and the Republic of Korea
On 1 October 2008, Thailand and the Republic of Korea celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Both sides held a number of events and activities throughout the year 2008 to commemorate this auspicious occasion, as well as to strengthen the foundations for closer cooperation in the years to come.
TThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea have jointly selected an official logo for the celebrations. The logo is composed of a gold number “5” in the Thai style, representing prosperity, while the number “0” uses the “Dynamic Korea” logo. The theme of the celebrations is “50 Years’ Friendship for the Future.
The friendship between Thailand and the Republic of Korea predates the official establishment of diplomatic ties. In the late 14th century, Siamese envoys were granted an audience by King Gongyang of the Koryo Kingdom. However, due to the difficulty of travelling from Siam to Koryo by sea, it was not until November 1950 that official contact was re-established.
During the Korean War, Thailand was among the first countries to dispatch soldiers to join the United Nations Command to defend the fledgling Republic of Korea. Today, Thailand is proud to remain part of the United Nations Command, a testament to both the sacrifice of our soldiers and our commitment to safeguard the freedom and security of the Republic of Korea.
On 1 October 1958, the two countries issued a joint communiqué establishing formal diplomatic relations. Since the official establishment of the relations, Thailand and the Republic of Korea have been enjoying their excellent ties in various fields of mutual interests such as politics, trade and investment, science and technology, partnership for development as well as people-to-people cultural exchanges. In 2007, the trade volume between the two countries was about 8 billion US dollars. In addition, Thailand is one of the premier holiday destinations for Korean tourists. In 2007, more than one million Korean tourists visited Thailand. On the same note, the Korean Wave or “Hanryu” has been popular among the Thais, resulting in an increasing number of tourists from Thailand to visit Korea each year.
On the 50th anniversary occasion, there were a series of activities taken place in Thailand and the Republic of Korea. Major activities in the Republic of Korea to commemorate 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relation between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Korea are as follows;
In April 2008, the celebration of Songkran festival was jointly organized by the Royal Thai Embassy and the Ansan City at the Hwarang Park. In June, the Royal Thai Embassy and the Ministry of Culture of Thailand, with collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea and the National Theatre of Korea, organised a Thai cultural performance at the National Theatre of Korea, featuring the traditional Thai puppet show from the Joe Louis Theatre, “Ramayana” Khon Mask Dance, Thai folk dance from 4 regions and Thai martial arts.
On 1 October 2008, the anniversary day was celebrated by the unforgettable performance by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra or BSO from Thailand, together with Korean musicians at the National Theatre of Korea. The BSO played the compositions of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX as well as Korean compositions. Along with this concert, the 50th Anniversary commemorative reception was hosted. Moreover, on the same day, the launching ceremony of a set of commemorative stamps jointly issued by Thailand Post and Korea Post, featuring the Grand Palace of Thailand and the Changdeok Palace of the Republic of Korea, was also held at the Concert at the National Theatre.
On 4 November 2008, there was the opening ceremony of a war memorial to commemorate the heroic sacrifices made by Thai soldiers during the Korean War. The ceremony was held at the United Nations Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) located in Busan. In addition, the ceremony to unveil this memorial was more meaningful with the participation of the Thai war veterans from the Korean War.
