News & Activities : On Sunday 19 May 2019, Mr. Apirat Sugondhabhirom, Consul-General of Thailand to Ho Chi Minh City was invited to attend the Vesak Day Celebration Ceremony 2019 at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh City.

On Sunday 19 May 2019, Mr. Apirat Sugondhabhirom, Consul-General of Thailand to Ho Chi Minh City was invited to attend the Vesak Day Celebration Ceremony 2019 at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh City.

The ceremony was organized by the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City chapter) aiming to celebrate the 2643rd birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, in conjunction with the United Nations’ international recognition of the Vesak Day. The event was co-chaired by high ranking monks of Vietnam namely (1) Most Venerable Thích Thiện Nhơn, President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Council and (2) Most Venerable Thich Thien Tam, Vice President of the VBS’s Executive Council/ Deputy Head of the VBS’s HCM City chapter, together with executives of Ho Chi Minh City namely (1) Ms. Vo Thi Dung, Vice Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, (2) Mr. Le Thanh Liem, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and (3) Ms. Tô Thị Bích Châu, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee.

Moreover, the event was attended by thousands of Buddhists (Bhikkhus, Bhikkhunis, and lay practitioners both male and female) from various sects such as Mahayana(especially the Annamese and Zen traditions) as well as Theravada sect. The organising committee has also invited representatives of Christian churches and Islamic community in the City as well as Confucianists to witness the ceremony.

The aforementioned event was organized after Vietnam had hosted the International Buddhism Conference for the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak during 12 – 14 May 2019 in Ha Nam Province which was attended by delegates from 112 countries, including senior monks and lay people from Thailand.

In the previous year, Thailand has also hosted the 15th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations and international Buddhist Conference on 25 – 27 May 2018.
